Maribel Mendez Guerrero achieved a major milestone by completing her Master’s degree in School Counseling, a testament to her perseverance and dedication. She currently works at Eastmont School District as the Migrant Recruiter, after 13 years of serving the district as a Migrant Graduation Specialist and Multilingual Advocate. Before transitioning into education, she gained valuable experience in healthcare, working with Columbia Valley Community Health, Children’s Mental Health, and Central Washington Hospital – Women’s Healthcare Center. Her professional journey first began at Columbia Valley Community Health, supported by OIC of Washington.
OIC played a pivotal role during some of Maribel’s most challenging moments. Growing up, her parents worked long hours in the orchards and local packing sheds, making it difficult for her and her siblings to access support for higher education. As a teen mom in high school, she faced additional obstacles but remained determined to create a better future. After graduating one semester early, she reached out to OIC, where mentors Louisa Mora and Martha Guerra provided guidance, encouragement, and practical support—from helping her craft a resume to securing an internship in her chosen field. They even provided professional clothing, giving her the confidence to step into the workforce and begin her new career path.
For Maribel, OIC represents opportunity, a chance for those who may not have privilege but are willing to work hard and strive for more. “OIC opens doors, but it is up to you to take the opportunity and grow,” she reflects.
Today, she proudly recommends OIC to students and families who may qualify, recognizing the organization’s lasting impact on her life and the community. She considers it a privilege to continue seeing OIC support others in achieving their goals, just as it did for her.
